The challenge of this project was to incorporate a handicapped accessible ramp for the client which had an elevation change of more than 42" without it being obtrusive. The final design included masonry planting beds, which acted as structural components for the deck as well as softening the large expanse of both deck and ramp. The deck was constucted of sustainably grown Mangaris Mahogany and utilized a hidden fastening system. The masonry walls are capped with poured in place stained concrete which, compared to the slate alternative, reduced the cost and environmental impact. The design extended to include landscape revisions, including the relocation of several existing trees.
